Born into a sharecropping family in rural North Carolina, he learned the discipline of hard labor before the age of ten.
1968
Called to Serve
He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Army upon graduating from North Carolina A&T University, beginning a two-decade career shaped by leadership, duty, and sacrifice.
1970s–1980s
Rising Through the Ranks
He served in multiple leadership roles and ultimately reached the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
