From the Cotton Fields
to the Pentagon

“I did not escape poverty. I outworked it. I did not forget where I came from. I carried it with me — all the way to the top.”
Dr. Raymon E. Crawford was born into the cotton fields of North Carolina — a world defined by hard labor, limited resources, and a society that had not yet decided to include him. What followed is one of the most extraordinary American journeys of the modern era.
Over the course of a distinguished career, Dr. Crawford rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Army, served in multiple combat and leadership roles, earned a Doctorate in Education, and served as Vice President at two historically Black colleges and universities. His story is not a story of luck. It is a story of endurance, discipline, and an unshakeable belief that the next generation deserves better.
Lieutenant Colonel, United States Army (Retired) — 20+ years of service
Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) — Academic leader and educator
Vice President at two HBCUs — Morehouse College Network & Grambling State University
Author of two published memoirs documenting his life and legacy
The cotton fields did not break me. They taught me what endurance looks like — and I carried that lesson all the way to the Pentagon.

A Taste of
the Story

Chapter One — The Fields

The sun rose the same way every morning over the fields — slow, indifferent, and unforgiving. By the time the light reached the rows where we worked, the dew had already begun to burn off the cotton bolls, and the day’s labor had already been decided for us. There was no choosing whether to go. There was no conversation about it. You rose, you dressed, and you went.
I was seven years old the first time I understood that the world outside those fields existed. A car passed on the road at the edge of the property — a long, dark car with chrome that caught the morning sun like a signal. I watched it until it disappeared. I did not know where it was going. I only knew that it was going somewhere I had not yet been, and that the distance between where I stood and where that car was headed was not measured in miles.

What Leaders Are Saying

“Dr. Crawford’s story is not just a memoir — it is a blueprint. Every young person who has ever been told their beginning determines their ending needs to read this book.”

Dr. Jamal Bryant

Senior Pastor, New Birth Missionary Baptist Church

“I have served alongside men of great character, but few have demonstrated the kind of sustained excellence that defines Raymon Crawford’s career. This book needed to be written.”

Col. Marcus Williams (Ret.)

United States Army, 20 Years of Service

“As an educator and a leader in higher education, I can say without reservation that Dr. Crawford’s contribution to this conversation is essential. A must-read for every HBCU family.”

Dr. Elaine Barclay

President, Academic Leadership Council
